Last time, we discussed how search engine optimization could make you money and this week, we shall proceed to how you can actually optimize your site.
How you can optimize your web content?.
In simple terms, search engine optimization is like switching sides with information seekers who use the search engines to get what they want.
So, to optimize your website, you need to know what your potential visitors would be looking for in terms of information, how they want it and what terms they are most likely going to use in their search. Before I go into details, it is important that I explain little on how the search engines work.
When an information seeker goes online with no idea of where to get what he wants, his natural first stop is at the engines. He makes a search by asking a question or by the use of the common jargons in the area where he is making his search. These jargons can be a word, phrase or two; it could even be a complete sentence. He writes this into the search box and clicks on “search” as the case may be.
From his click on search, the search engine searches through the “world wide web” for websites that has as little as an alphabet - related information on what was typed into the search box. It searches through and presents the relevant sites according to their level of relevance – from the most relevant to the least.
Now, depending on your use of the relevant “keywords” of your niche on your site, your website gets ranked on the search engines. Though criteria of ranking on top are constantly put on review by the search engine webmasters, two of them still has a great deal of relevance when it comes to ranking on top in search results. They are - the relevance and frequency of keywords used.
Keywords are individual words that best describe what the seeker of information is actually looking for. The more specific they are, the more relevant are the search results that are produced.
If the web surfer is looking for information on the best feeds that are available in his country for his fish, and he types in just ‘fish’ or ‘feeds’, results would be somewhat confusing. This is because of the fact that in the case of the ‘fish’, the engine would search the web and come up with all sites that make use of the word ‘fish’ regardless of how it is used. By this I mean the search engine could come with a search result that rank site that has nothing doing with fish rearing at all as one of the top ten websites to visit. Same goes with the search on the word ‘feeds’. ‘Fish feeds’ is more specific and result oriented keyword search than the words used individually.
‘Fish feeds’ would stream line the search down to feeds that are meant for fishes, this can be further cut down to say, ‘cat fish feeds’ as the case maybe. This is how keywords work for information seekers, now what of the information providers like you, how relevant are the keywords to you?
Relevance of keywords to web masters.
At the beginning of this post, I said that the best way to optimize your website is by switching sides with internet surfers who need what you provide.
First thing to do is to ask your self is that if you are to make a search for something in your very own niche market, how would you do it, what would you type into the search box, what important words or jargons would you use to search for it?
Your answer(s) to these questions would give you a good idea of what your potential customers are using to find what you have to offer online. They would make their search and either find you or your competitors in the business. It should be you and your business that they should find and not your competitors’. Don’t you agree? To this end I strongly advise that you stick around and pay good attention to the following tips on how to out - do your competitors on the search engine. But… that would be next time, till then, play safe.
